A Christmas Boar!
Micah makes a great high pressure shot! Caught between the herd and a 175 boar, decisions have no time.
Paul spent two long days trying to find the critters that caused all the damage that we found throughout the ranch. The routing was very intense as were the tracks in the various wallows that we found throughout the first morning on his two-day hunt.
The weather was not cooperating as we hoped for rain and did not get it. I guess you could say it was the bottom of the ninth, full count, with the sun setting. We were just about to accept the fact that we may not get a hog. We went back to a field where we had seen lots of sign. Much to our joy, I saw ten hogs feeding in the middle of the field, working their way towards some oak trees. With only minutes of legal shooting night we got right with the wind and began to stalk in for a shot.
The hogs had disappeared over a hill, which allowed us to move quickly and get into position. We could hear them under the oak tree feeding and fussing with each other. Knowing there wasn't much time we decided that the first hog that presents itself would be the one we would take. This young boar chased a smaller hog out from under the tree and it stood broadside at 45 yards. With little discussion, Paul and at the bigger of the two and squeezed one off. The thunderous boom from his new .270 since I heard scattering throughout the hills, leaving behind the board he chose who dropped in his tracks. Congratulations to Paul for a job well done!
The first big game hunt for Lars. We were in a deep canyon following the herd after lossing track of them a couple of times. We finally got into a great position with the herd feed towards us. At 50 yards, lars makes a great shot and harvests a great boar!
Gianni's First Hog 2011
Gianni bags he first wild boar with his new rifle. One well-placed shot dropped this hog at 30 yards. The hogs were fighting and making too much noise to remain inconspicuous. Amber spotted the hogs as they emerged from their hide away on a step hill. Gianni and I made a stalk around the ridge to get the wind right. Every time we would get close, the wind would change. We thought we had spooked the hogs and lost them in the heavy brush. So we sat on a hilltop to listen for a while, to maybe hear them fight or something. Sure enough, only a few seconds had passed and we were startled by a huge grunt just over our left shoulders. The hogs had actually made a u-turn and were at a wallow just behind some trees. We used our ears and stayed above them. Suddenly, we were face to face with several hogs and one was looking right at us. Gianni brings up his rifle and locks onto the one hog that is totally broadside and in the open. I was about to turn his attention to a couple of boars fighting and moving in the grass to our left. But Gianni was not going to let the long quest continue. He was determined to harvest the first good hog that was broadside. And that is just what he did. BOOM, the gun reports and hogs scatter in every direction. After the shot, half of the herd came running right at us. Gianni chambered another round and prepared to shoot the on-coming hog. However; the hogs veered off at the last moment and ran for the hills. Gianni's hog lay where it once stood and the look on Giannis' face was of absolute disbelief and amazement! It took a few minutes to sink in.. He had finally done it!

Tyler's First Wild Hog 2011
Tyler had an amazing first hunt! It was a long day, which began with a flock of turkeys that were very willing to give me some gobbles as I called to them. That was fun, but we had serious focus for finding some hogs. We were up and down rooted hills all day looking for the herd that had left the fresh sign. Late in the evening, Amber spotted some hogs from about 800 yards. It was tough getting through the steep ravines that separated us from the hog but Tyler and his father Rob were excited to get right in with the herd while the boars were fighting, Read the whole story..

****** CAUTION ****
Hogs can be dangerous when provoked!
Discovery had a TV show recently called "The Pig Bomb" on Animal Planet. It was a one hour documentary about the national feral hog and imported boar problem. The pigs are over populating and becoming much bigger and more aggressive than in recent history. Solving the problem requires removing over 70% of all wild hogs this year just to keep from having an increase in hog numbers next year! That of course is impossible. But we can do our part by harvesting and eating one potentially dangerous, non-native, invasive, ever-adapting, delicious pig at a time.
